Two edge orchestration product features developed by Nearby Computing under 5GMED, recognized as innovative by the European Union
Nearby Computing, the Edge and 5G Orchestration and Automation platform company based in Barcelona, Spain, and 5GMED partner, has achieved to have four of its product features recognized as innovations by the Innovation Radar of European Commission, two of them developed in the context of 5GMED.
Angelos Antonopoulos, the Innovation Director, explains that they are proud to see the recognition of the two contributions of Nearby Computing under 5GMED:
- End to end orchestration and slice management (NBC jointly with i2CAT and ATC): NearbyOne platform is the cornerstone for the 5G network and service orchestration in 5GMED. NearbyOne orchestrator undertakes the role of 5G Core slice manager, while it also provides the required southbound interfaces towards the transport and RAN slice managers to enable an end-to-end slice management across different technological and administrative domains.
- Mechanisms and APIs for AI-driven Service Orchestration (NBC): In the context of 5GMED, NearbyOne orchestrator has been extended to include mechanisms and interfaces that enable the communication with external AI frameworks to facilitate the zero-touch service orchestration. In this way, NearbyOne can support innovative use cases, such as the “Follow-me infotainment”, where the the service is running at the Edge of the network and follows the users along their way in cross-border scenarios.
This acknowledgement certifies the market potential of edge orchestration as one of the key technologies of the future, decisive for the development of many revolutionary apps based on AI, IoT and virtual reality, among others.
The Innovation Radar platform builds on the information and data gathered by independent experts involved in reviewing ongoing research and innovation projects funded by the European Commission. These experts also provide an independent view regarding the innovations in the projects and their market potential. The platform aims to make information about EU-funded innovations from high-quality projects visible, showing the many excellent technological and scientific advances being delivered by researchers and innovators around Europe. This initiative has the support of EU Members States and, to date, Ministers from 23 countries have signed the Innovation Radar declaration confirming their support for this initiative.
The two other product features included in the European Commission’s Innovation Radar platform are:
- Extensible edge controller API for open-format service onboarding, from the European project SMART5GRID.
- End-to-end intelligent orchestration and slice management, from the EU-funded project Affordable5G.
The CEO of Nearby Computing, Josep Martí, explained: “We’re very proud to see that our edge orchestration platform receives this quadruple recognition as innovative by the European Comission, which makes us to be deemed as Key Innovators”.
“It is one of the harvests of our work since 2018, when we founded Nearby Computing as a spin-off of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. We have also been identified as one of the pioneers in edge computing by leading analysts, so we are more than happy with these milestones. We’re making this new technology a reality and helping advance towards the real digital transformation”, he added.
More about Nearby Computing
Nearby Computing helps telcos and enterprise customers unleash the potential of Edge Computing through Orchestration and Automation of MEC and 5G. Nearby Computing’s platform NearbyOne offers end-to-end, cross-domain orchestration capabilities that are built for speed, performance and availability for latency-sensitive, data-intensive and mission-critical applications. It is a multi-cluster automation platform to manage a multi-cloud, multi-tenant, multi-site, multi-platform scenario and deliver management abilities across all the tiers of the network – from Cloud to Data Centre to Edge; all through a single pane of glass. The solution covers all critical elements of deployment automation – from the initial zero-touch provisioning of the edge nodes, to deploying telco functions, and easy application on-boarding to lifecycle management, QoS Assurance and SLA monitoring.
